Two Broken Tigers On Fire In The Night, Flicker Their Souls To The Wind.

Ever since first hearing Al Stewart’s song “Roads To Moscow” 40 years ago, artist Jim Bolek wanted to recreate the line “Two broken Tigers on fire in the night, flicker their souls to the wind.” After many years of research and collecting the various parts and images needed, he created a diorama this year. He showed it to Al Stewart at a recent concert at the Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix. Al’s enthusiastic response was to ask Jim to make a limited edition of the diorama, so that other fans could share a part of this epic song.

The diorama depicts trucks filled with Russian soldiers (We wait in the lines for the final approach to begin) in a town in Germany, April of 1945 (It’s been almost four years that I’ve carried a gun/At home it’ll almost be spring). The song’s narrator reviews the carnage; two German Tiger I tanks burning in a town street. The town devastated on the drive to end the Great Patriotic War. While most of the soldiers try to enjoy a meal or sing a song accompanied by accordion, he takes in the scene with an artist’s heart, a part of his story and his long journey. The end is near (…you can taste it in the wind, the war is over.) Will he ever see his home?

The diorama is multimedia, including wood, plastic, plaster, paint, and electronics. It is enclosed in a birch veneer box approximately 1’-6” wide by 1’-1/2” deep by 1’-3/16” tall. It requires three 9 volt batteries to operate the “moonlight” and “flames” inside the tanks. It weighs approximately 10 pounds and can sit on a shelf.
