One straight-ahead post-bop/hard bop CD that Freddie can certainly be proud of is this one, which was recorded live at the Douglas Beach House in Half Moon Bay, CA on November 20, 1983. Joined by tenor and soprano saxophonist Bob Sheppard, pianist Billy Childs, bassist Bob Bowman and drummer Eddie Marshall, a 45-year-old Hubbard plays with a lot of soul and conviction on a 12-minute version of “One of Another Kind,” a 20-minute examination of Herbie Hancock’s charming “Dolphin Dance” and a 16-minute interpretation of the standard “I Can’t Get Started.” Stretching out is the rule during this set, and Hubbard’s acoustic quintet says what needs to be said. Highly recommended. ~ Alex Henderson, Rovi
