When contemporary jazz guitarist Les Sabler<\/strong> entered Brown\u2019s Funky Joint<\/strong> studio near Los Angeles to begin tracking, Brown, also a guitarist, recommended that Sabler swap out his trusty guitar in favor of Brown\u2019s vintage Gibson Johnny Smith<\/strong> model. The electric guitar that has innate acoustic qualities and balances tone and sustain gave Sabler an entirely new sound, which he used to create his eighth album, \u201cTranquility<\/strong>,\u201d dropping January 29 on New Vista Records<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    \u201cThe guitar\u2019s sound is a sonic departure from anything I had previously recorded and this resulted in a successful single release, \u2018Keep Pushin\u2019.\u2019\u00a0My fascination with the expressive tone of this instrument and my comfort in playing it led me to acquire my own, a vintage \u201867 beauty,\u201d said the Nashville-based Sabler.<\/p>\n

    The guitar recommendation was the second time Sabler heeded Brown\u2019s counsel. The first came last December when Brown was in Nashville to perform. Sabler came to the gig to hang with Brown. It was then that Brown offered to produce Sabler\u2019s next record.<\/p>\n

    \u201cI was both surprised and delighted that he offered to produce for me. Without hesitation, I seized the opportunity. We started collaborating immediately and two months later, we sat down to record at his studio in LA,\u201d said Sabler.<\/p>\n

    A year earlier, Sabler wrote and released \u201cIn The Light\u201d as a standalone single, which spent three weeks at No. 1 at WAVE.FM<\/strong> in Sabler\u2019s homeland, Canada. The guitar player was encouraged and decided to reinvest the residuals he received from all the airplay into recording a new album, his first since 2014\u2019s Brazilian jazz outing \u201cJobim Tribute<\/strong>.\u201d Sabler and Brown cowrote eight songs for \u201cTranquility,\u201d collaborating with hitmaker Lew Laing<\/strong> (\u201cKeep Pushin\u2019\u201d and \u201cWhere Has She Gone\u201d), Jeff Carruthers<\/strong> (\u201cEasy Moves\u201d) and Shane Theriot<\/strong>, the latter with whom they cowrote the single slated to go for playlist adds on January 18 titled \u201cCrescent City Strut.\u201d<\/p>\n

    \u201cPaul and I collaborated with Shane Theriot on several compositions that are among my favorites on the project.\u00a0Shane\u2019s New Orleans heritage and his work with Hall & Oates<\/strong> brought a vibe to these songs that really inspired my playing,\u201d said Sabler.<\/p>\n

    Sabler and Brown revisited \u201cIn The Light\u201d on the disc with Sabler recording new guitar parts for the debut single as well as for the album\u2019s lone remake, \u201cSunrise,\u201d a George Benson<\/strong> original that Brown masterfully illumined with Lee Thornburg<\/strong>\u2019s trumpet and trombone.<\/p>\n

    Speaking of Benson, Sabler references the contemporary jazz crossover legend when discussing how much the choice of guitar impacted the sound of the \u201cTranquility\u201d album.<\/p>\n

    \u201cThe title track really exemplifies the beauty of this exceptional guitar that was the instrument of choice for George Benson\u2019s classic \u2018Breezin\u2019.\u2019 The song title \u2018Tranquility\u2019 is so fitting because I can virtually escape to that destination when I listen to this song,\u201d said Sabler.<\/p>\n

    Sabler and Brown tracked a pair of tunes last February prior to the coronavirus quarantine, including \u201cKeep Pushin\u2019,\u201d which dropped as a single in May. Work on \u201cTranquility\u201d had to be put on hold until July. When they resumed, Sabler recorded his guitar parts in Nashville after Brown crafted the tracks in Los Angeles utilizing a cast of ace studio musicians such as the deep pocketed rhythm section comprised of bassist Roberto Vally<\/strong>, drummer Gorden Campbell<\/strong> and percussionist Lenny Castro<\/strong>. Bolstered by crackling horn work from Thornburg and saxophonist Greg Vail<\/strong>, the album was completed in September.<\/p>\n

    \u201cTranquility\u201d is a melody-rich, contemporary jazz listening experience. The set consists of vibrant harmonies, funky R&B grooves and sophisticated instrumental pop. Sabler\u2019s deft and soulful electric guitar occasionally yields to his more sensitive nylon-stringed guitar, including on the eloquent beauty \u201cEsselle\u2019s Dance,\u201d which Sabler says \u201cis as beautiful as anything I have ever recorded.\u201d<\/p>\n
